Between October 17 and October 18, 2026 (up to 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units carried out 3,180 interventions—averaging one intervention every 27 seconds—across various provinces in the country, following distress calls from citizens. These operations spanned the full scope of Civil Protection activities, including responses to traffic accidents, household incidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and other emergency services.
Regarding traffic accidents, Civil Protection units responded to 205 incidents across several provinces. These accidents resulted in 11 fatalities at the scenes and left 260 others with injuries of varying severity. The victims received on-site care before being transported by our teams to local hospitals. The highest casualty count was recorded in the province of Jijel, where three people died following a collision between a car and an excavator near the Chbira gas station, located in the municipality and district of El Milia.
Additionally, Civil Protection personnel intervened to extinguish two urban fires—one in the province of Algiers and another in the province of Bordj Bou Arreridj. No human casualties were reported; our emergency teams successfully brought both fires under control, preventing them from spreading to adjacent areas. Civil Protection units in the Wilaya of Algiers responded to an incident involving a natural gas explosion followed by a fire in a building (ground floor plus three upper levels) in the Al-Shabshab neighborhood, Reghaia municipality, Rouiba district. The incident resulted in one fatality and four injuries—two of whom were in a state of shock. The victims received immediate care and were promptly transported to the local hospital.
Furthermore, during the same period, the specialized units for combating forest and agricultural fires intervened to extinguish 13 vegetation fires across various provinces nationwide. These included one brush fire, two fires involving dry grass, three fires affecting fruit-bearing trees, and seven fires involving hay bales. The rapid and effective intervention of our units successfully extinguished these blazes and prevented them from spreading to surrounding vegetation. Following the thunderstorms that affected the provinces of Sidi Bel Abbès, Tlemcen, Laghouat, Béchar, and Béjaïa, our units intervened in the province of Sidi Bel Abbès to rescue and evacuate 20 women after rainwater leaked into a Quranic school located in the “200-Housing Unit” neighborhood in the municipality of Sidi Bel Abbès. Additionally, our teams recovered three vehicles—carrying a total of four people—that had become stranded due to the accumulation of rainwater on National Road 13 in the municipality of Ben Achiba Chelia. A truck, with one person on board, was also recovered after water accumulated on National Road 104 in the municipality of Marhoum. In the province of Tlemcen, our units rescued a family of five from a vehicle stranded due to rising water levels in Oued Magoura, in the municipality of El Bouihi. Furthermore, in the province of Béchar, a vehicle with two occupants was recovered after becoming stranded in the middle of a wadi (dry riverbed) in the Hassi El Houari area, within the municipality of Béchar.
