Civil Protection Units intervention results between August 20 and 22, 2026 (in the last 48 hours)
Between August 20 and 22, 2026 (until 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units recorded 9,361 interventions, averaging one intervention every 18 seconds. These included 4,002 medical evacuations and 1,040 other operations across several provinces nationwide, following distress calls from citizens. These interventions covered various areas of Civil Protection activity, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and security operations.
In the context of traffic accidents, Civil Protection units carried out 406 interventions following numerous accidents across the country. These accidents resulted in 9 fatalities at the scene and 519 injuries of varying severity. The victims received on-site medical treatment and were then transported by our services to local hospitals.
Civil Protection services in Algiers intervened to transport two deceased individuals and two others suffering from respiratory distress after carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from a water heater in their family home in the Mohamed Saidoun neighborhood of Kouba municipality, Hussein Dey district. The victims received on-site treatment and were then transferred to the local hospital.
Civil Protection services also responded to six separate urban and other fires in the provinces of Oran, Blida, Algiers, Boumerdès, Batna, and Tamanrasset. These fires resulted in two people suffering from respiratory distress following a brush fire in the area known as El-Balaadiya, in the municipality and district of Khemis El-Khechna, Boumerdès province. The victims received on-site treatment and were then transported by our services to the local health center. Our emergency response teams successfully contained these fires and prevented their spread to neighboring areas.
Regarding the interventions of the Coast Guard and Recreation Service during the last 48 hours, they carried out 3,040 interventions, which resulted in the rescue of 2,337 people from imminent drowning, as well as the provision of first aid to 578 people on site. Additionally, 122 people were transferred to local health centers. Six people drowned at sea, including four at prohibited beaches in the provinces of Tlemcen (one each), Skikda (one each), Chlef (one each), and Mostaganem (one each). One person drowned at a permitted beach (outside of Civil Protection service hours) in the province of Algiers. One person drowned in the province of Ain Temouchent (swimming is prohibited – red flag). As for water bodies, one drowning death was recorded in the province of Timimoun.
Likewise, the Forest and Agricultural Firefighting Service intervened during the same period to extinguish 71 fires of vegetation, including: 14 forest fires, 6 bush fires, 11 scrubland fires, 18 fruit tree fires, 13 hay belt fires and 9 palm fires, across several states of the national territory. It is worth mentioning that the rapid and effective intervention of our services allowed us to extinguish these fires and prevent their spread to the rest of the vegetation.
