Civil Protection Units intervention results between January 20 and 21, 2026 (in the last 24 hours)
During the period from January 20 to 21, 2026 (until 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units recorded 3,343 interventions, averaging one intervention every 52 seconds. These included 2,238 medical evacuations and 750 other operations, across several provinces of the country, following distress calls from citizens. These interventions covered various areas of Civil Protection activity, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and security operations.
Regarding traffic accidents, Civil Protection units carried out 154 interventions following numerous accidents across several provinces. These accidents resulted in 5 deaths at the scene and 165 injuries of varying severity. The victims were treated at the scene and then transported by our services to local hospitals. The highest toll was recorded in Laghouat province, with 3 deaths and 1 injury, resulting from two traffic accidents.
Civil Protection services intervened to provide first aid to 20 people suffering from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning due to faulty heating appliances and water heaters in their homes in the following provinces: Bouira (6 people), Setif (6 people), Medea (3 people), Naama (3 people), and Djelfa (2 people). The victims were treated at the scene and then transferred to local hospitals. Meanwhile, in Khenchela province, one person died from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The victim, a 31-year-old man, was poisoned by CO from a gas stove inside his home in the 104-unit housing complex in Khenchela municipality and district. His body was transferred to the morgue at the local hospital.
It should be noted that Civil Protection services in Algiers province intervened to extinguish four urban fires. These fires resulted in one person suffering from shortness of breath, following a fire that broke out on the ground floor of a building. Consisting of (T.A. + 03), in the municipality of Baba Hassan and the district of Draria, the victim was treated at the scene and quickly transported to the Baba Hassan clinic. Our services’ intervention enabled us to extinguish these fires and prevent their spread to neighboring areas.
Regarding the Civil Protection interventions related to the weather fluctuations during the last 24 hours, which affected several provinces including: Relizane, Chlef, Mascara, Tipaza, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Ain Defla, Blida, Medea, Algiers, Bouira, and Tizi Ouzou, our services carried out several operations to pump out rainwater that had seeped into homes, neighborhoods, and roads. In Relizane, the Civil Protection services evacuated 400 people from 8 buildings in the Jaafar residence and removed 100 vehicles due to the accumulation of rainwater using inflatable boats in the municipality of Relizane. In Chlef, the body of a 13-year-old girl who had been swept away was recovered. The waters of Wadi Shagroun in the municipality of Zeboudja, while the Civil Protection elements of the state of Tipaza evacuated and transported a family of four from their home following the leakage of waters of Wadi Mazfran in the municipality of Koléa. Regarding the interventions of the Civil Protection services related to the falling of trees, soil erosion and the collapse of walls, they carried out 23 operations in the state of: Algiers 8 operations, Medea 8 operations, Tissemsilt 3 operations, Relizane (2) operations, Blida 1 operation and Tiaret 1 operation.
