Civil Protection Units intervention results between August 19 and 20, 2026 (in the last 24 hours)

Between August 19 and 20, 2026 (until 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units recorded 4,440 interventions, averaging one intervention every 19 seconds. These included 2,114 medical evacuations and 585 other operations across several provinces nationwide, following distress calls from citizens. These interventions covered various areas of Civil Protection activity, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and security operations.
In the context of traffic accidents, Civil Protection units carried out 224 interventions following numerous accidents across the country. These accidents resulted in 5 fatalities at the scene and injuries to 292 others, with varying degrees of severity. The victims received on-site medical care and were then transported by our services to local hospitals.
For your information, the Civil Protection services of Algiers intervened following the death of two (2) people and the injury of one (1) other due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from a water heater inside a house located in the Mohamed Saidoun neighborhood, Kouba municipality, Hussein Dey district. The victims were transferred to the local hospital.
Regarding the interventions of the Coast Guard and Recreation Service during the last 24 hours, 1089 interventions were carried out, resulting in the rescue of 769 people from imminent drowning, the provision of first aid to 279 people on site, and the transfer of 37 people to local health centers. Four drowning deaths were recorded: three in El Tarf Province and one in Mostaganem Province. In El Tarf Province: the first case was the drowning of a 20-year-old man at El Merdjane Beach (a beach open for swimming outside of lifeguard hours), in the municipality and district of El Kala; the second case was the drowning of a 6-year-old child at Messida Beach (a beach open for swimming outside of lifeguard hours), in the municipality of Souarekh, district of El Kala; and the third case was the drowning of a 43-year-old man at Es-Sbi Beach, in the municipality of Echatt, district of Ben M’hidi. In Mostaganem Province: the drowning of a young man. Twenty people drowned at Kharouba beach (a beach open for swimming outside of lifeguard hours) in the municipality and district of Mostaganem. The bodies of the victims were transported to local hospitals by Civil Protection personnel.
It should be noted that Civil Protection officers in the Mostaganem province also responded to the drowning death of a seven-year-old child in a swimming pool in the municipality of Mazagran, Hassi Mamache district. The victim’s body was transferred to Mostaganem Hospital.
Furthermore, the Forestry and Agricultural Firefighting Service intervened during the same period to extinguish 57 vegetation fires, including: 15 forest fires, 1 brush fire, 18 scrubland fires, 10 fruit tree fires, 9 hay bale fires, and 4 palm tree fires, across several provinces nationwide. The rapid and effective intervention of our services allowed us to extinguish these fires and prevent their spread to other vegetation.
