Raising awareness of the dangers of using firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials during the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday
As the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday approaches, an occasion to reflect on the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and emulate his noble character and values, the General Directorate of Civil Protection records, each year, a number of unfortunate incidents resulting from the dangerous use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics, particularly those involving children. These incidents also include fires that threaten the safety of people and property, as well as cases of panic and fear that can affect the elderly, the sick, young children, and pregnant women.
The use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics during this occasion, in addition to their circulation and possession throughout the year, despite their danger and the prohibition against their use, necessitates intensifying awareness campaigns and continuously reminding the public of the serious risks that can result from their use, including serious injuries, burns, loss of hearing and sight, and the outbreak of fires.
In this context, the General Directorate of Civil Protection has been organizing a community-based awareness campaign since August 20, 2026, to prevent the various dangers resulting from the use of firecrackers, pyrotechnics, and candles. The campaign aims to instill a culture of prevention and promote safe behavior, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable group: children.
This campaign includes intensifying awareness activities through educational sessions and presentations, especially before Friday prayers, engaging with public spaces and squares, and maintaining a presence near locations where these materials are sold. Various media outlets and social media platforms will also be utilized as primary tools for disseminating preventative messages.
Furthermore, coordination with various relevant public institutions and bodies will be strengthened to unify efforts and activate prevention and awareness mechanisms. This will contribute to protecting citizens and ensuring their safety, while emphasizing the significant responsibility of parents in monitoring their children and educating them about the dangers of these materials.
These efforts aim to ensure a safe celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday, under the slogan: “A Prophet’s Birthday Without Accidents.”
In this context, the General Directorate of Civil Protection calls upon citizens, especially parents, to adhere to the following preventive measures:
– Educating children about the dangers of firecrackers and fireworks, and not allowing them to possess or use them.
– Avoid using firecrackers or fireworks near people and vehicles, or near hospitals, health centers, parking lots and gas stations, to avoid injuries or fires.
– Do not use or throw firecrackers near forests and vegetation areas, as they may cause fires in the vegetation and significant material and environmental losses.
– Do not point firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials towards people, homes, or vehicles, as this may result in serious injuries and accidents.
– Be aware that using these materials may cause them to explode in the hand, causing serious burns, eye injuries, loss of hearing, and injuries that may, in some cases, lead to amputation of fingers or limbs.
– Avoid using firecrackers inside homes or near flammable materials and furniture, to prevent fires, especially in rooms and on balconies.
Regarding the use of candles, the General Directorate of Civil Protection recommends the following:
Place the candles on firm, stable, and non-flammable supports.
Ensure that the use of candles is by adults and under constant supervision.
Keep candles away from all flammable materials and objects, especially mattresses, blankets, furniture, and curtains.
Never leave candles burning unattended, and extinguish them when leaving the place.
Do not leave candles, matchboxes and similar items within reach of children.
