A national awareness campaign on preventing traffic accident risks coinciding with the 2025/2026 school year

Awareness campaign on the occasion of the 2025 – 2026 school year
The safety of our children… is all our responsibility

As part of its annual plan for awareness-raising activities in 2025, the General Directorate of Civil Protection is organizing a national awareness campaign on road safety under the slogan “Our Children’s Safety… Our Shared Responsibility,” coinciding with the start of the 2025/2026 school year.

This campaign aims to raise awareness among students, particularly first-time students, and their parents about the risks associated with their daily commutes to and from school.

Believing that parents play a fundamental role in educating their children about road safety rules, the General Directorate of Civil Protection places this group at the heart of its awareness efforts. Children often lack sufficient awareness of the dangers they face on public roads. These dangers gradually emerge from the age of three when they enter kindergarten, increase significantly around the age of six when children start going to school alone, and peak between the ages of 11 and 12 during middle school. This underscores the importance of a gradual approach to road safety education, especially for young pedestrians.

In this context, the General Directorate of Civil Protection calls on parents to ensure their children are aware of and adhere to the following guidelines:

Accompany children during their first days of school to train them to choose the safest route to and from school.

Use pedestrian crossings, and if none are available, choose a location with clear visibility in both directions and visible to drivers.

Exercise caution even when crossing pedestrian crossings.
Look left, right, and then left again before crossing the road to ensure it is clear of vehicles.
Respect traffic signals and only cross after vehicles have come to a complete stop.
Walking calmly across the road and avoiding running to prevent falls.
Encourage children to walk as a way to develop their awareness of road safety, especially on roads leading to schools.
Distinguish between playgrounds and areas where vehicles pass.
Walk on the sidewalk near homes.
Teach children to recognize potential hazards on the road, such as vehicles leaving garages, construction sites, or during rain and snow.

In addition to awareness campaigns, the General Directorate of Civil Protection has established a field operations unit to strengthen the presence of its teams on the ground, in order to accompany students and ensure a rapid response to calls for help.
