Within the framework of the operational plan dedicated to beach safety and recreation at designated swimming beaches, the Civil Protection services recorded 82,093 interventions between June 1st and August 31st, 2026. These interventions resulted in the rescue of 58,751 people from drowning and the provision of first aid to 19,537 others at beach lifeguard stations. Our emergency services treated victims for various injuries, and 3,692 injured individuals were transported to hospitals.

Regarding watercraft accidents, two deaths were recorded: one each in the provinces of Skikda and El Tarf. Twenty-nine people received medical assistance in the provinces of Tipaza (13), Algiers (8), Annaba (3), Oran (2), El Tarf (2), and Jijel (1). On the other hand, during the same period, 148 drowning deaths were recorded, including 76 at beaches where swimming is prohibited and 70 at beaches where swimming is permitted, 38 of which occurred outside of lifeguard hours.

It is worth noting that the General Directorate of Civil Protection has deployed a significant operational force of 11,000 personnel, including professional officers, divers, and seasonal workers, at beaches where swimming is permitted to ensure the safety and security of beachgoers.

As for swimming in pools and ponds, this phenomenon continues to cause many human losses at the national level, with 62 deaths recorded since June 1, 2026, distributed as follows: irrigation basins 22 people, ponds 16 people, swimming pools 8 people, water complexes 7 people, valleys 5 people and dams 4 people, most of them children and teenagers, despite the awareness campaigns organized during this period.
