Notice regarding prevention of heatwave dangers
Due to the high temperatures recorded in the northern regions of the country, which will continue until Sunday, July 12, 2026, with temperatures potentially reaching 46 degrees Celsius, the General Directorate of Civil Protection recommends exercising caution and following preventive measures to avoid the dangers associated with the heatwave and how to deal with such weather conditions. In this context, the General Directorate of Civil Protection calls for adherence to the following preventive measures:
- Avoid exposure to sunlight, especially for the elderly, those with chronic diseases, and children.
- Avoid going out and moving around during this period, except in cases of necessity. Going out should be in the early morning or late in the evening, and stay in the shade as much as possible.
- Create an airflow throughout the building once the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature.
- Close the windows, curtains, and balcony facades that are exposed to sunlight all day long.
- Turn off electric lights or reduce their use.
- If you must go out, wear a hat, light-colored (cotton) clothing, and preferably something light in color. Seek shelter in cool places or in the shade.
- Never leave children alone inside a car.
- Avoid work that requires physical effort (sports, gardening, and other crafts…).
- Give elderly people, children and the sick to drink water regularly and do not wait until they become thirsty.
- For drivers whose cars do not have air conditioning, it is advisable to avoid traveling long distances during the hottest times. It is better to schedule them for late evening when temperatures are lower or at night.
- Avoid swimming in bodies of water (dams, ponds, basins…), and do not hesitate to go to beaches where swimming is prohibited.
- Those wishing to go to forested areas must avoid doing anything that could cause forest fires.
The General Directorate of Civil Protection also makes the green number 1021 or the emergency number 14 available to citizens to report any danger, specifying the nature of the danger and the exact address in order to ensure a quick and effective intervention.
