Warning: Thunderstorms
Following the special weather bulletin predicting heavy rainfall across several states of the country, the General Directorate of Civil Protection informs that the states of Tipaza, Algiers, Blida, Bouira and Medea may record amounts of up to 50 mm, while amounts may reach 70 mm in the states of Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Setif, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba and El Tarf.
Given these anticipated weather disturbances, the General Directorate of Civil Protection calls on all citizens to exercise the utmost caution and vigilance, and to strictly adhere to the following safety guidelines:
While driving: reduce speed, turn on lights even during the day, leave a sufficient safety distance, and avoid dangerous maneuvers.
Near valleys: Stay away from valley courses and their edges, and educate children about the danger of approaching them due to the possibility of a sudden rise in water levels.
Do not take risks: Do not attempt to cross floods or waterways, whether on foot or using vehicles.
Avoid dangerous places: Do not take shelter inside tunnels, under bridges, or in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Accompanying children: Make sure to accompany children to schools via the safest routes, and be aware of the danger of falling electrical wires during strong winds.
Flooded roads: Avoid driving over flooded roads, and if the vehicle breaks down, leave it immediately and move to a safe place.
Home safety: Cut off electricity and gas in case rainwater leaks into the house.
Lighting options: Provide alternative lighting options that do not rely on electricity (such as flashlights and backup batteries).
Lower temperatures: Ensure homes are regularly ventilated while using heating appliances or water heaters to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning incidents.
