Civil Protection Units intervention results between January 17 and 18, 2026 (in the last 24 hours)

During the period from January 17 to 18, 2026 (until 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units recorded 2,844 interventions (an average of one intervention every 30 seconds), including 1,780 medical evacuations and 365 other operations, across several provinces of the country. These interventions followed distress calls from citizens and covered various areas of Civil Protection activity, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and security operations.
In the context of traffic accidents, Civil Protection units carried out 171 interventions following numerous accidents across several provinces of the country. These accidents resulted in 11 deaths at the scene and injuries to 213 others, ranging in severity. The victims were treated at the scene and then transported by our services to local hospitals. The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Tamanrasset, with 8 deaths, following the overturning and subsequent fire of a 4×4 vehicle on Provincial Road 142 in the municipality and district of Tadrouk.
Civil Protection services intervened to provide first aid to 18 people suffering from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning due to faulty heating appliances and water heaters in their homes across the following provinces: Setif (2 people), Constantine (6 people), M’Sila (4 people), Naama (5 people), and El Bayadh (1 person). The victims were treated at the scene and then transferred to local hospitals in stable condition.
Civil Protection services intervened to extinguish three urban fires in the provinces of Algiers, Sidi Bel Abbès, and Ouargla. First aid was administered to six people suffering from shortness of breath due to smoke inhalation from a fire that broke out in a third-floor apartment of a four-story building (ground floor + 4 floors) in the 160-unit housing complex in Sidi Bel Abbès. Additionally, one person sustained second-degree burns from a fire in a car at the “Hadj Omar” gas station in Ouargla. Two other people suffered from shortness of breath due to a fire in two rooms in Ben Aknoun, Algiers. The victims were treated at the scene and quickly transported to local hospitals. Our services’ prompt intervention enabled us to extinguish the fires, control them, and prevent their spread to neighboring areas.
