Civil Protection Units intervention results between May 20 and 21, 2026 (in the last 24 hours)

  

  During the period from May 20 to 21, 2026 (until 8:00 AM), Civil Protection units recorded 3,245 interventions, averaging one intervention every 26 seconds. These included 1,910 medical evacuations and 485 other operations, across several provinces of the country, following distress calls from citizens. These interventions covered various areas of Civil Protection activity, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, firefighting, and security operations.

In the context of traffic accidents, Civil Protection units carried out 227 interventions following numerous accidents across the country. These accidents resulted in 3 fatalities at the scene and 266 injuries of varying severity. The victims were treated at the scene and then transported by our services to local hospitals.

In addition to the Civil Protection’s intervention to extinguish five separate urban fires in Algiers (two fires), Blida (one fire), Tipaza (one fire), and Alizane (one fire), these fires resulted in three people suffering from respiratory distress. One fire broke out in an apartment in a five-story building (floor + 5 floors) in the 160-unit housing complex in the municipality and district of Ouled Yaïch, Blida Province. Another fire in a residence in a five-story building (floor + 5 floors) in the 500-unit housing complex in the municipality of Bouharoun, district of Bou Ismail, Tipaza Province, resulted in two injuries and five people suffering from respiratory distress. The victims were treated at the scene and then transferred to local hospitals. Our emergency services successfully contained these fires and prevented their spread to neighboring areas.

Civil Protection units in Algiers and Oum El Bouaghi also intervened following the deaths of 5 people poisoned by carbon monoxide (CO). In Algiers: the deaths of two people, a 40-year-old man and a 14-year-old child, were due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a water heater in an apartment on the second floor of a five-story building in the Kouba neighborhood, Hussein Dey district. In Oum El Bouaghi: the deaths of three people, a 51-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman, and a 13-year-old child, were due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a heater in a residence in the Echourouk neighborhood, Oum El Bouaghi municipality and district. The victims’ bodies were transferred to the morgues of local health centers by Civil Protection personnel.
